  42. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS

  45.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  46.    4DOS.
  47.    
  48.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  49.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  50.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  51.    reinstall your purchased copy of 4DOS, just restart
  52.    the INSTALL program.]
  53.  
  54.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  55.    copy of 4DOS:
  56.  
  57.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  58.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  59.          4DOS).
  60.  
  61.       >> Start 4DOS.  It will "install itself".
  62.  
  63.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  64.          4DOS with your name and serial number if necessary.
  65.  
  66.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  67.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  68.  
  69.    When installing 4DOS under Windows 95/98 we recommend that you do NOT
  70.    use a "long" directory name.  If you do, you will have to know and
  71.    use the equivalent short name to load 4DOS in CONFIG.SYS; it's easier
  72.    to simply use a short name from the beginning.  (This is not a 4DOS
  73.    limitation.  It's because DOS, which starts before Windows 95/98 and
  74.    loads the primary command processor, cannot handle long file names.
  75.    While 4DOS fully supports long file names, to make DOS work well it
  76.    is best to install 4DOS in a directory with a short name.)
  77.  
  78.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  79.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in 4DOS.TXT
  80.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  81.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  84. "Self-Installation"
  85.  
  86.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  87.    4DOS.COM, from a prompt.  This will automatically start the
  88.    self-installation file _4INST.BTM, which will finish installing
  89.    4DOS on your system.
  90.  
  91.    _4INST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  92.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  93.    
  94.    When the installation is finished, _4INST renames itself to _4INST.BTX,
  95.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  96.    abnormally, _4INST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  97.    next time you start the program.)

  100. Manual Installation
  101.  
  102.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  103.    and Installation Guide in the file 4DOS.TXT.  The detailed
  104.    instructions for 4DOS are in Chapter 5.

  106.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  107.    automated installation file, _4INST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  108.    _4INST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  109.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  110.    4DOS.

  113. Branding
  114.  
  115.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  116.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  117.    in 4DOS (trial version users can skip this section).
  118.  
  119.    In most cases the self-installation process will run the brand program
  120.    for you if it is available.  If it is not, or you need to perform the
  121.    branding manually for another reason, use the instructions here.
  122.  
  123.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  124.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BR4DOS.EXE.  In order to
  125.    perform the branding you will need the brand program, and the
  126.    registered name, serial number, and validation code which came with
  127.    your purchased copy of 4DOS.
  128.  
  129.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  130.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  131.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  132.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  133.    this file.  (We are currently hoping to make replacement brand codes
  134.    available through the support area of our web site at
  135.    http://www.jpsoft.com/, but we do not yet know when this service will
  136.    be available.)

  138.    To run either BRAND.EXE or BR4DOS.EXE use these simple steps:
  139.  
  140.       (1) Start 4DOS or go to an existing 4DOS prompt.
  141.  
  142.       (2) Change to the directory where 4DOS.COM is installed, and
  143.       verify that both 4DOS.COM and BRAND.EXE or BR4DOS.EXE are in
  144.       that directory.
  145.  
  146.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  147.       4DOS (information from other products won't work!).
  148.  
  149.       (4) Enter the command BRAND or BR4DOS and follow the instructions
  150.       on the screen.
  151.  
  152.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  153.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  154.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  155.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  156.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  157.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  158.    upgrade arrives.

  160.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  161.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  162.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  163.    not work.
